Sam Fender won his first ever Ivor Novello Award

Alternative singer-songwriter Sam Fender from North-Shields won his first ever Ivor Novello Award.

The Ivor Novello Academy strives to celebrate diverse and creative singer-songwriters. The Ivor Novello Awards have taken place every May since 1956 and 2022 was the year that Sam Fender won his first ever Ivor Novello Award. Fender won the award for the ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’ for his highly popular song Seventeen Going Under taken from his recent smash hit album of the same name.

In March of this year, I travelled up to Wembley Arena to see Sam Fender. Fender is one of my favourite musicians and his concert certainly did not disappoint. His set list was incredible, his opening number was Will we talk? from his album Hypersonic Missiles, which was an amazing way of opening the show. This was made even better because TikTok legend Francis Bourgeois surprised the audience by appearing on stage on a scooter and showed off his scooter tricks, my friend and I found this hilarious.

The staging for the concert was fantastic, the lighting enhanced every performance. The edition of his band mates on stage made me really appreciate the talent of Fender and his band. Sam Fender won the Ivor Novello Award for one of his breakthrough songs Seventeen Going Under. This was his penultimate song at the concert. Everyone in the arena stood and song every single word of this song, it was incredible and was a highlight of the concert. The last song he performed was my favourite song called Hypersonic Missiles. The crowd were impeccable the whole way through this song.

Sam Fender was a worthy winner of the Ivor Novello Award.
