Paris Fashion Week: redesigning the industry

Paris fashion week is now over, and the collections have brought up many important statements and questions about the way society views the industry.

Wardrobe containing everyday clothing

Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, and Vivienne Westwood were some of the few fashion houses that displayed their most recent designs to the world.

Many of the collections on display were incredibly wearable and contained pieces that could be found in many people’s wardrobes already. The extreme wearability of the pieces means that keeping up with the latest trends is becoming more accessible to the public.

Miu Miu’s collection at first glance appeared to be care-free and casual. Miuccia Prada, the brand's creative director wanted to show off the realities of clothing and celebrate them. The messaging behind this collection is important in society today, especially since clothing is only getting more expensive; appreciating the clothes that you already own is becoming more important.

One fashion house that really emphasised the ready-to-wear messaging was Chanel. Many of their looks felt nostalgic to the early 2010s. Several of their pieces could be found in everyone’s wardrobe. Although a relatively boring runway show, the clothes seemed relatable and accessible to everyone.

There were tops and skirts that look like they could be found in high street chains, like Primark and H&M. For instance, stripes were a running theme throughout. Zara has had multiple stripy jumpers go viral on social media that reflect similar silhouettes and styles as the ones by Chanel.

Louis Vuitton’s collection was focused on the idea of travel-ready fashion. The collection considered functionality as well as style. Many of the pieces appear to be wearable for the everyday and would not be out of place on the average Highstreet. This is a strength of the collective as it recognises that the public would be looking to events like Paris fashion week for inspiration and as a tool to keep up with trends.

Sarah Burton’s final collection for Alexander McQueen was a celebration of the beauty of female bodies. This makes it even more special how every piece seemed relatable and realistic to recreate most looks. The collection reflected society's changing perspective of the treatment of female bodies.

This season’s Paris fashion week was thought provoking and a huge milestone for the way we view high end fashion and treat everyday fashion.
