The Wilko shop on Commercial Road will close its doors for the final time on Sunday.
This has become a problem for those who live in the centre of Portsmouth. Natasha Hobson-Collier, from Southsea said: “Wilko was my favourite place to buy things like cleaning products. Nowhere else has deals like them.”
The chain was forced to close after they failed to find a buyer after going into administration in August. Wilko is another of many empty stores in Portsmouth. This provides another reason for people not to go into the centre of the city.
For those who do not have easy access to transport it is now difficult to get the same quality products at the same prices as the much loved brand. Most other low cost retailers are found in retail parks and these are only accessible by car.
Earlier this year, Portsmouth City Council announced a regeneration plan for the north end of Commercial road. This will include greener spaces and accessible play equipment for children; with the aim of increasing footfall of the high street.
The closed Wilko will remain empty until further notice.
